A tack hammer used for carpet stretching and edge work

Carpet Stretching

Restretching is our most-requested repair. It fixes carpet that has gone loose without replacing a single yard of it.

Why it happens

Carpet loosens. That is normal, not damage.

Carpet is installed stretched tight over tack strips around the edge of a room. Over years of foot traffic, furniture being dragged across it, and ordinary humidity swings, that tension lets go a little at a time. The carpet itself is usually neither worn out nor damaged. It is simply no longer anchored as tightly as the day it was installed.

That’s the whole reason restretching exists as its own job, separate from repair: nothing is torn or broken, so nothing needs replacing. We pull the carpet back to drum-tight and re-secure it on the tack strip, and the ripples are gone.

Signs you need it

How to tell it’s a stretching job

Ripples or waves

Visible rolling bumps across the carpet, especially in high-traffic paths between rooms.

Bunching near a doorway

Loose fabric that gathers at a threshold or where two rooms of carpet meet is a classic stretching sign.

A trip hazard

Carpet loose enough to catch a foot or a chair leg is loose enough to genuinely be dangerous, not just unsightly.

In their words

What restretching actually looks like

One visit, done

What a stretching appointment involves

  1. We assess the room

Furniture that needs to move, and how loose the carpet has actually gone.

  2. We re-anchor it

The carpet is pulled back to proper tension and re-secured on the tack strip along every edge.

  3. We check the whole room

Not only the spot you noticed. Carpet that is loose in one corner is often loosening elsewhere as well.

If restretching won’t fix what you’re seeing, whether a tear, a burn or a section genuinely worn through, we will say so and point you to carpet repair instead. We’d rather quote the job that actually fixes it.
